A Professional Grout Recoloring Job Gave This Century-Old Home in Chelsea, NY a Hint of Modern
August 31, 2017
This home, located in the neighborhood of Chelsea in Queens, had been in the same family for generations. Remodeling and renovations had been carried out throughout the years by the different family members that had lived in the house, but somehow the floors had been overlooked for quite a while now. Our clients had recently bought the house from their relatives and decided to spruce up the kitchen floor. They didn't know where to start, but after a quick Internet search, they came across our Chelsea grout recoloring service.Upon reading some of the work we'd done in the area and what grout recoloring could do, they decided to request a free in-home evaluation.
Evaluation day
Our grout recoloring specialist arrived right on time on the date appointed to check out the area that needed work. The floor was a rectangular, bluish gray tile that covered the entire kitchen. Both the tile and grout lines were quite dirty; grease had built up on the surface, and some tiles were even stained. The technician performing the evaluation recommended a tile and grout cleaning and a grout recoloring service to improve the look of this area. Since the new homeowners wanted a fresh look without breaking the bank, they thought it was the perfect solution and set a date to do the job.
Transformation day
On the day set, we got to the house bright and early and started by masking all the areas that needed to be protected. The first step to giving the floor the refreshed look they were after, was carrying out a deep tile and grout cleaning.
A thorough tile and grout cleaning
We proceeded to apply our proprietary tile and grout cleaner on the entire surface and let it soak for a few minutes. After that, we used a high-speed gentle scrubber to remove most of the dirt on the tile and grout. Once that was done, we used the steam cleaner to treat the most stubborn areas and we removed all excess product with a wet vacuum.
A grout recoloring to enliven the look of the floor
Once the area was completely dry, we proceed to recolor the grout lines. Grout recoloring is a process used to improve the look of tile floors but our process also protects floors by sealing the grout and protecting it from external agents. Our flagship process, ColorSeal, gives tile floors a like-new feel while making grout spill and water resistant, preventing future staining. The clients chose a light shade to use on this floor, which helped enhance the look of the tile and made the room look brighter.
Tile Armor: the ultimate tile and grout protector
After the tile and grout cleaning and color sealing, we buffed Tile Armor on the entire surface. This is a clear tile and grout sealant that helps further protect the surface. Tile Armor is nontoxic, water-based and safe for the entire family, including pets.
The result of this three-stage process was a lively-looking floor and kitchen that the new homeowners loved.
Recommendations from a grout recoloring expert
As we usually do, we gave our clients a couple of recommendations to help them keep the floor's appearance:
- Any spills should be cleaned as soon as possible.
- Use a pH-neutral, soap-less cleaner at all times.
- Vacuum frequently to prevent dust from settling on the grout.
- They should never let the floors air-dry. All excess water and/or cleaner should be removed with a towel or terry cloth.
- Never use acidic or ammonia-based cleaners because it could affect the color of the grout.
- Don't use steel wool or other abrasives on tile or stone. These can scratch and dull the surface.
Cleaning and sealing tile and grout can go a long way in preserving the look of your home's floors. It removes the dirt that regular cleaning cannot, leaves the floors looking bright and refreshed, and makes the surfaces easier to clean. And it does it at a fraction of the cost of a full renovation.
